Most bad party menus are not bad because the food is bad. They are bad because everything on them does the same job.
Four dips and a cheese board is not a menu, it is one idea repeated. Nothing hot, nothing you eat with your hands, nothing sweet, nothing that fills anybody up. People eat for twenty minutes and then quietly start thinking about ordering something.
Below are three complete menus you can use as they are, and — more usefully — the six-slot rule they are all built on. Once you have that, you can build a menu from any recipes you like in about four minutes and it will be balanced.
There is a printable halloween party menu planner template at the end. No email required.
Table of Contents
Menu 1: Gothic Dinner Party for 8

Adults, seated or standing, one real cooked course.
| Slot | Dish | Made |
|---|---|---|
| Dips | Muhammara and black tahini hummus | 3 days ahead |
| Hot | Squid ink pasta | 25 minutes on the night |
| Hand-held | Mummy baked feta and charred flatbread | Wrapped the day before, baked on arrival |
| Fresh / sharp | Figs, black grapes, raw fennel, endive | Shopping |
| Sweet | Halva tombstone bark and ossi dei morti | 2 weeks ahead |
| Drink | Pomegranate and hibiscus punch, batched | Day before |
Total cooking on the night: about 25 minutes. Prep order: bark two weeks out, dips three days out, board assembled two hours before, pasta while guests are on the board.
This is the compact version. The full expanded treatment — run sheet, tablescape, and the section on planning a menu around guests wearing masks — is on the Midnight Masquerade page.
Menu 2: Kids’ Halloween Party for 12

Children plus a handful of accompanying adults. Assembly-heavy, low-risk, and designed to fill them up before the sugar arrives.
| Slot | Dish | Made |
|---|---|---|
| Dips | Monster baba ganoush bowls with olive eyes | 1 day ahead |
| Hot | Build-your-own mummy pita pizzas | Assembled by the children, baked in batches |
| Hand-held | Mummy-wrapped dates | 2 days ahead |
| Fresh / sharp | Cucumber batons, carrot sticks, apple slices | On the day |
| Sweet | Halva bark and orange slices | 1 week ahead |
| Drink | Colour-changing red cabbage lemonade | Base 3 days ahead |
Allergen notes: the dates and the bark both contain nuts or sesame. For a school party, drop both and substitute fruit and a nut-free bake. Flag every allergen on a card beside each dish — parents will look, and it saves five separate conversations. Sesame is not an optional line here: it has been a US major food allergen since January 2023, and on a Mediterranean table it is load-bearing rather than a garnish you can pick off.
The one that does the work is the build-your-own pizza station. It is dinner and the activity simultaneously, which removes the argument about eating. The colour-changing cabbage drink is the other one they will remember.
Menu 3: Grazing Buffet for 20

Standing, four hours, no seating plan, no main course.
| Slot | Dish | Made |
|---|---|---|
| Dips | Muhammara, black hummus and bloody whipped feta — doubled | 3 days ahead |
| Hot | Three mummy baked fetas, staggered across the evening | Wrapped the day before |
| Hand-held | Stuffed vine leaves, za’atar breadsticks | Bought / 2 days ahead |
| Fresh / sharp | Figs, grapes, fennel, endive, cornichons | Shopping |
| Sweet | Halva bark, ossi dei morti, dark chocolate | 1–2 weeks ahead |
| Drink | Two batched jugs, refreshed twice | Day before |
Build two boards, not one. A single enormous board creates a queue and the people at the back cannot reach. Two identical smaller ones at opposite ends of the room is a better party and costs the same.
Stagger the hot items. Three baked fetas coming out at 8pm, 9pm and 10pm keeps the room moving and gives you three moments where something arrives. The full board build is here.
Build Your Own: The Six-Slot Rule

This is the part worth keeping. Every menu above is the same six slots filled differently, and once you can see the slots you can build a menu from any recipes you like.
| Slot | What it is for | How many | Rule of thumb |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Dips | The volume, and the thing people actually eat most of | 2–3 | One black, one red, one earthy. Never more than three. |
| 2. Hot | Changes the register of the whole evening | 1 | If only one thing is cooked on the night, this is it. |
| 3. Hand-held | Something to pick up while talking | 1–2 | No cutlery, no plate, no looking down. |
| 4. Fresh / sharp | Cuts the fat and provides the texture that resists | 1–2 | Raw fennel, endive, cornichons, citrus, cut fruit. |
| 5. Sweet | Ends the meal without another cooking session | 1–2 | Something that keeps two weeks. Two options, not four. |
| 6. Drink | One batched thing everybody is holding | 1 | Mixed the day before. Topped per glass so it never goes flat. |
Then check it against three questions.
- Is anything hot? A menu of entirely cold food feels like a snack no matter how good it is. One hot thing changes the whole register of an evening.
- Are there four textures? Something that shatters, something that resists, something that pops, something soft. Almost every failing party menu is soft all the way through.
- Can it be made ahead? Count the things that must be made on the day. If it is more than two, cut something. The whole purpose of a menu is to let you be in the room.
Dietary balance, cheaply: most Mediterranean mezze is vegetarian or vegan by default, so the base menus above already work for most tables. The usual gap is nut-free — muhammara, dates and halva all contain nuts or sesame, so keep one substantial nut-free item in every menu rather than treating it as an afterthought. Whipped feta is the easiest one: no sesame, no nuts, no shellfish.

Costing Your Menu
Rough per-head ranges. These are estimates and prices vary enormously by region, season and where you shop — check them against your own supermarket rather than treating them as fixed.
| Menu | Per head | Where the money goes | Where to save |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gothic dinner for 8 | Mid | Squid ink pasta, good feta, candles | Make all three dips; buy the pasta dried rather than fresh |
| Kids’ party for 12 | Low | Pita, cheese, fruit | Almost everything here is cheap. The pizza station is the cheapest main course there is. |
| Grazing buffet for 20 | Mid to high | Volume of dips, bread, olives, nuts | Buy loose from a Middle Eastern grocer; make every dip |
Three things reliably control the cost:
- Make the dips, buy everything else. Homemade dips cost a fraction of shop-bought and they are the highest-volume item on the table. This one decision does most of the work.
- Cheese is where budgets go to die. On a Mediterranean board, the dips and one warm anchor are doing the job cheese does on a cheese board. You need far less of it than instinct suggests.
- Buy the dried fruit, nuts and olives loose from a Middle Eastern grocer rather than pre-packed from a supermarket. The difference on a party-sized quantity is substantial and the quality is better.
The single biggest cost saving is not buying for people who do not come. Plan slightly under your confirmed numbers — the calculator does that arithmetic for you.
5 RULES FOR A PARTY MENU
| # | Rule | Line beneath |
| 1 | Something Has To Be Hot | Cold all the way through reads as a snack, not a menu. |
| 2 | Two Dips, Not Six | The anchor slot. People eat more of fewer dips. |
| 3 | One Fresh Or Sharp Thing | The reset. It stops everything else tasting rich. |
| 4 | Four Textures, Not One | Shatters, resists, pops, soft. Most menus are all soft. |
| 5 | Two Things On The Day, Max | More than that and you spend the party in the kitchen. |
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I serve at a Halloween dinner party?
One thing from each of six slots: two dips, one hot dish, one hand-held item, one fresh or sharp element, one sweet, and one batched drink. That structure balances effort, texture and richness automatically, and it means only one or two things need cooking on the night.
How do I plan a Halloween party menu?
Work backwards from what must be cooked on the day and keep that list to two items or fewer. Then fill the six slots, check you have something hot and at least four textures, and batch the drink. Anything that cannot be made ahead needs a good reason to be on the menu.
What is a good Halloween menu for kids?
A build-your-own assembly station as the main event, one dip, one wrapped item and one small sweet. The assembly station does double duty as dinner and activity. Flag every allergen on a card beside each dish rather than answering the same question twelve times.
How much does a Halloween party menu cost per person?
It varies far too much by region to give a reliable figure, but the controllable factors are consistent: make the dips rather than buying them, buy less cheese than you think, buy nuts and dried fruit loose from a specialist grocer, and do not cater for people who are unlikely to come.
What Halloween menu works for a big group?
A grazing buffet with no main course. Two boards at opposite ends of the room rather than one large one, one hot item staggered across the evening, and everything else assembled in advance. Twenty people is a standing party regardless of what you intended.
How many dishes should a Halloween menu have?
Six, filling the six slots above. More than that and each one gets less attention, costs more and takes longer, without the party being noticeably better.
